Purpose Leads to Success

Houston Texas – 10/17/2016

I had a Private Social Club client who’s General Manager had this posted on his office wall for years:

Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare

-Japanese Proverb

I noticed it the day I met him and we often talked about people issues through the lens of that proverb. Action without purpose or vision always perplexed him, like so many people wandering aimlessly through work, and life. We made it part of the Club’s Culture to always act with purpose in mind. That purpose was reflected in the Club’s mission statement committing to an exemplary member experience.

The General Manager’s vision was that all employees be committed to, and guided by that purpose. New employees could recite that mission within their first week on the job. Employees were given spot-rewards for going above and beyond their job duties to enhance the member experience.

With it being annual planning season, be sure to put purpose and vision first on the agenda. When where you’re going is clear, your team becomes magnetized toward the actions necessary to achieve it.

That’s our spark, what’s yours?
